For the past year, independent filmmaker, Jaimie Clements has turned her attention to capturing and recording the events and stories behind the movement to transform 118th Avenue.

What would you do if the neighborhood you lived in was neglected, run down and had a tarnished image of being ridden with crime, drugs and prostitution?  ‘The Avenue’ follows a group of people who live in such an area as they try to make a difference (118th Avenue in Edmonton).  How can they change the reality and image of their neighborhood and will they be able to succeed?  What effect will their actions have? ‘The Avenue’ features Christy Morin of Arts on the Ave, Chris Hayduk of CRUD – Community Response to Urban Disorder, local residents – Barbara Heather, Jo-Ann Siebert, Cindy Burgess and Carla Meyer, social worker – Kris Andreychuk, and commentary from ‘Neighbor Power’ author – Jim Diers.

The Avenue is still in production but here’s a little glimpse of what to expect:

Demolition Order of Cromdale Hotel Upheld in Court

The Court of Queen’s Bench has sided with a City of Edmonton order to demolish the Cromdale Hotel in the city’s northeast (82 Street, 118 Avenue).

The City had issued a demolition order a year ago (October 23, 2009) on the basis that the Cromdale, vacant since 2004, was in an unsightly condition and was detrimental to the surrounding neighbourhood.

The owner appealed the order, but the City’s Community Standards and Licence Appeal Committee agreed with the demolition order (March 12, 2010); that decision was upheld in a ruling released today by the Court of Queen’s Bench.

“This is a win for the city and for the neighbourhood around the Cromdale,” says Ryan Pleckaitis, Acting Director, Complaints and Investigation Section, Community Standards Branch. “We’re pleased that the Justice agreed with our position that demolition was the only viable alternative to alleviate the detriment to the surrounding area.”

“The Cromdale has been the site of illegal activity for some time,” Pleckaitis adds, “and the building has undergone significant physical deterioration. We need to be able to create and enforce conditions that make for a safe and livable community.”

The Municipal Government Act authorizes the city to issue demolition orders against property owners in appropriate circumstances.

The owner of the Cromdale can still appeal to the Alberta Court of Appeal.

CRUD is excited to announce its newest initiative; the Nice Neighbour Recognition Awards. Once a month, starting in January 2010, a community member in north-central Edmonton who has helped their neighbours or contributed to their neighbourhood in a special way (large or small) will be personally acknowledged for their efforts.

Active and involved community members are the foundation for a strong and health community. Frequently, many people participate in their communities in a variety of positive ways. CRUD intends to celebrate their efforts through the Nice Neighbour Recognition Awards. The purpose of this program is to recognize the wonderful and often over looked day-to-day contributions residents make in their neighbourhood.

The order issued by the City of Edmonton is for Demolition only.  That means that the only option is for the owner to demolish the building.  Of course, this order is subject to appeal which is happening on December 03, 2009.

Stay tuned to CRUD for further updates.

Cromdale Update – Nov 9

Due to routine follow ups on the Cromdale hotel, CRUD has just received word that a order under sec. 546 of the MGA was issued to the owner of the Cromdale Hotel in late October. This order is a very positive and notable step which we are all thrilled to hear about.

This order has been appealed, by the owner of the hotel, and will be before the Quasi-Judicial Appeal Committee at the Council Chambers on 2009 December 03 from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm. It is very important for community members to attend this hearing on December 03 and show support for the order.

By-law was not able to specify the details of the order, but stated it is important for the community.

My experience tells me that 546 MGA orders include any number of remedies to nuisance properties, up to and including demolition.

Stay in touch with CRUD for further details, they will be released as they come available.

Thanks everybody for your continued support on this serious community issue.
